If there is a government shutdown in America, then 8.75 lakh employees may be furloughed, while 14 lakh employees engaged in emergency services may have to work without pay. The last time there was a shutdown for 35 days in 2018, more than 20 lakh people were affected.
To pass the bill, 170 MPs from the Republican Party and 196 MPs from the Democratic Party voted in favor. While 34 Republican MPs voted against this bill.
Opposition to the bill even in Trump’s party
Earlier, a bill was brought in the lower house of America on Thursday night with the aim of stopping the shutdown. This bill was introduced by the Republican Party with the support of America’s newly elected President Donald Trump and his ally Elon Musk. However, opposition Democrats protested and struck it down.
To pass the bill, two-thirds or 290 votes were needed from the House of 435 MPs. But only 174 MPs voted in support. Whereas 235 votes were cast against it. 38 MPs from Trump’s party were also among those who opposed the bill.
Earlier, House Speaker Mike Johnson had prepared a bill with the Democratic Party. However, Donald Trump and Musk had strongly objected to this bill and did not allow it to be introduced.

However, the US government cannot borrow as much as it wants. For this a loan limit is fixed. The US government is able to pay its expenses within this limit. The process of taking loans in America started in 1939. But since then the loan limit has been increased 103 times.
The last time in May 2023, the borrowing limit of the US government was fixed at 31.4 trillion dollars i.e. 26 lakh thousand crore rupees. It expires on January 1, 2025.
In the bill that the Biden government was bringing, there was a provision that the debt limit should be maintained till March 14, 2025. After that the Trump government should look into the matter.
Trump said- If shutdown happens then so be it
Trump and Musk have objection to this. Trump said Congress should get rid of the debt limit or extend it until 2029. Without this we will not make any agreement. Trump had said on this matter on Friday morning that if there is a shutdown, it should happen now, not after January 20. This is Biden’s problem, but if Republicans can help fix it they will.
Many Republican Party lawmakers do not agree with Trump’s demand to completely get rid of the debt ceiling. Those MPs want the loan to be taken within the limit.
How will the shutdown affect America? Due to the bill not being passed, the American government will not have money for expenses, which means the government will not be able to spend on salaries to government employees and all other expenses. Many government employees will not get salary on New Year. However, emergency services like medical services, border security and air services will continue.

In the last 50 years, there have been 20 shutdowns in America due to stuck funding bills. During Trump’s last tenure alone, the government had to face shutdown 3 times. The 2019 shutdown continued for a maximum of 35 days, due to which the American economy suffered a loss of Rs 25 thousand crores.

Earlier this week, Speaker Johnson had prepared a 1500-page bill. This bill had a provision of $100 billion for disaster relief, $10 billion for agriculture and salary increase for MPs.
In protest against this, Musk made more than 150 posts on his own social media handle X. Musk said that this bill is being brought to weaken us. We cannot start from a weak position. He said that no bill should be passed in the House until the Trump government comes to power.
