Cilia Flores, wife of ousted President Nicolas Maduro, has suffered serious injuries in the Venezuelan operation of the US Army.

According to the New York Post report, when 69-year-old Flores appeared in New York court on Monday, her face was covered with two bandages. One bandage was above the eyes and the other on the forehead.

A blue injury mark was clearly visible on his right eye. Flores’ lawyer Mark Donnelly told the court that these injuries occurred when the US military captured him.

The lawyer said Flores also had fractured ribs. They may need treatment. He asked the court to order a complete X-ray of Flores to ensure that he is in good health while in custody.

Flores pleaded not guilty

Flores was accompanied by her husband Nicolas Maduro in court. Maduro has been accused of several charges, including cocaine trafficking and weapons crimes, to which he has pleaded not guilty.

Maduro said, “I am innocent. I am not guilty of anything that has been said here. I am a decent person.”

Flores also repeated the same thing in Spanish through an interpreter. He pleaded innocent to conspiracy to send cocaine to America and other charges related to weapons and drugs.

Court directed to get necessary treatment

Judge Alvin Hellerstein, who is presiding over the case, directed prosecutors to work with Flores’ attorneys to ensure he received the treatment he needed.

At the same time, Maduro’s lawyer separately told the court that his client also has some health problems, which need attention.

Cilia Flores and her husband Nicolas Maduro face serious charges. If these allegations are proved, both of them can be sentenced to life imprisonment. Even the possibility of death penalty is being mentioned.

American officials say that on the basis of these allegations, they took sudden action and removed Maduro from power and forcibly expelled him from the country.

Husband and wife looked tired during court appearance

During the hearing, Flores needed support to sit at the defense table. Maduro stood up and spoke in Spanish, which was translated by the court’s appointed translator. It was told that both were looking very tired and weak physically.

CNN legal analyst Laura Coates reported that both were having trouble sitting and getting up from a chair. Maduro was looking at his wife again and again. Flores appeared more calm than her husband.

Maduro, 63, and Flores, 69, were detained by the US military in Venezuela on January 3. Both say that this action was illegal. His next court appearance has been scheduled for March 17.
