BCCI and ICC expressed grief over the death of 3 club cricketers from Afghanistan killed in Pakistan attack. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said, the news of the death of innocent people and especially the lives of players is heart-wrenching.
International Cricket Council Chairman Jay Shah also expressed his condolences on social media platforms. He said, we stand with the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) in this time of shock.
What did Jai Shah say? ICC Chairman Jay Shah wrote, ‘Heart is saddened by the death of Afghanistan’s young cricketers Kabir, Agah, Sibghatullah and Haroon. His dreams remained unfulfilled due to the attack. The death of young players is bad news not only for Afghanistan cricket but for the entire cricket world. We stand with the Afghanistan Cricket Board in this difficult time.
What did BCCI say? BCCI said in media advisory, BCCI stands with the Afghanistan Board. The cricket family sympathizes with those who lost their lives in the attack and their families. The Board strongly condemns such attacks.
What is the whole matter? 3 club cricketers of Afghanistan died in Pakistan attack. 14 Afghans have also been killed in the attack while 16 are injured. The 48-hour ceasefire between Pakistan and Afghanistan ended at 6 pm on Friday. It was agreed to take it forward. But a few hours later, Pakistan carried out an air strike in Paktika province.
According to Afghan media Tolo News, several houses in Urgun and Barmal districts were targeted in these attacks. This area is near the Durand Line, the border of both the countries.
In response to this incident, the ACB has announced its withdrawal from the Tri-T20 series to be held in Pakistan in November. ACB said that this step has been taken out of respect for the slain cricketers. Teams from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka were to participate in the tournament.
Players returning after playing a cricket match were attacked ACB issued a statement on social media platform ACB did not provide any further information about the attack.
On the day of the attack, Kabir was adjudged man of the match in his village tournament. A picture with his trophy is going viral.
Afghanistan withdraws from T-20 series to be held in Pakistan
Following the attack, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) withdrew from the Tri-T20 series to be held in Pakistan in November. The team was to play matches against Pakistan on 17 and 23 November. This would have been the first time that Afghanistan would have played against Pakistan on its soil.
However, before this, Afghanistan had played the matches of 2023 Asia Cup and this year’s Champions Trophy in Pakistan, but then it did not face the host team Pakistan.
Afghanistan team cricketers expressed displeasure over the attack
Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan called this attack on cricketers immoral and barbaric. Rashid wrote-
I am saddened by the loss of civilian lives in the recent Pakistani air strikes on Afghanistan. It is a tragedy that took the lives of women, children and young cricketers who dreamed of playing for their country.
Afghanistan cricket team player Gulbadin Naib said-
We are saddened by this attack in which innocent civilians and fellow cricketers were martyred. This attack by the Pakistani Army is an attack on our people, pride and freedom, but it will never break the spirit of Afghanistan.
