Saqib Saleem is in the news for the web series ‘Captain’. In a conversation with Dainik Bhaskar, he shared the character, preparation and acting process. They understand the script and the director’s vision before choosing a project. In ‘Kaptaan’, humor and human weaknesses were added along with physical transformation to make the character real. He described the 6-month cricket training experience of the film ’83’ as a special phase of his career. Also talked about early days, debut with Yash Raj Films and audition struggles. He said that even today he believes in learning and improving himself. Here are the highlights of the conversation with Saqib Saleem: Question: What is the process of selecting the role for ‘Captain’? Answer: I read the script first. I do it only when I understand the story and enjoy it. Then I adapt myself according to the director’s vision. I believe that the process of every film and show is different because every director has a different thinking. Question: What inputs did you give regarding your character ‘Samar’ in ‘Kaptan’? Answer: My only feedback was that the character should not seem just serious or heroic. It should also have humor and human weaknesses. We tried to make him seem like a real person, who makes mistakes and learns from them. Question: How much preparation did you do for this role? Answer: Worked hard. Lost about 7-8 kg weight. The character is of an encounter specialist, who is always on the field, so fitness and agility were essential. Question: You said that the process of every project is different, would you like to give any example? Answer: The process of Kabir Khan’s film ’83’ was different. He asked to play only cricket for 6 months. Acting later, the team had to be formed first. This was a unique experience in my career. Question: What was the challenge in ’83? Answer: The biggest challenge was that we had to forget the old style. To play like Mohinder Amarnath, I had to learn his walking and batting style. It is difficult to learn a new thing by forgetting what you already know. Question: How did your acting career start? Answer: I had an interesting beginning. I had gone to audition with a friend, his didn’t pass and mine did. The first work I got was in an ad, for which I got Rs 25,000. I went to pass time. In the evening a call came that you have been selected, the budget is Rs 25 thousand. I got nervous and said that I don’t have 25 thousand to give, I thought I would have to pay. Then he laughed and said that you will get the money. If I had not got the first ad, I would have gone to Delhi and taken over the family business. I had come telling my father that I wanted to explore myself for a year. I lied a little, because if I had told you directly, they might not have believed me. He got the film the same year, so there was no need to convince him. Question: How did you get your debut film? Answer: There was a long audition process. Shanu Sharma, casting director of Yash Raj Films, got different scenes done for 7-8 months. Sometimes singing, sometimes acting. It seemed as if a workshop was going on. Then I got ‘Mujhse Friendship Karoge’ of Yash Raj Films. I consider myself lucky to have started with such a big company. Question: What was the biggest challenge of your career? Answer: I keep laughing and talking, that’s why sometimes people don’t take me seriously. They don’t see my hard work. Now I have learned not to try to change people’s perception, just do the work honestly. Question: Where do you get inspiration from after so many years of career? Answer: I learn from everyone. I have worked with actors like Salman Khan, Ranveer Singh, Varun Dhawan, Taapsee Pannu and Rani Mukherjee. One gets to learn something from everyone. Question: Are you still ready to give auditions? Answer: Absolutely. If I want to work with a filmmaker, I am ready to go and audition myself. One should not be afraid of rejection, it is part of an actor’s job. Question: But many actors are afraid of rejection, how do you see it? Answer: See, rejection is in the DNA of an actor. We should not take it personally. Sometimes the role is not for you, it does not mean that you are not a good actor. Even today I don’t shy away from giving auditions, because this is part of our work. Question: How do you handle increasing expectations and pressure? Answer: I focus on giving my best. I can’t control people’s thinking, but I can control my hard work and honesty. Nowadays many times wrong information also spreads, so it is important to avoid it. Question: How do you view social media and information overload in today’s time? Answer: There is a lot of information today, but more wrong than right is spreading. Everyone has to be the first to give news, so many times the correct information does not come. I try to stay away from this noise. Question: If you get a chance, whose biopic would you like to do? Answer: I would like to do Virat Kohli’s biopic. I love cricket and people also say that I can do this role. Question: What kind of books do you like to read? Answer: I like reading books on sports personalities. Like have read books of Yuvraj Singh, Shane Warne, Chris Gayle and Andre Agassi. I like to know people’s experiences. Question: What is the biggest success for you? Answer: The biggest success for me is that I have been in the industry for 15 years. My parents and sister are with me, that’s the biggest thing. The rest you are getting is a bonus.
