Famous Malayalam film director Ranjith Balakrishnan has been sent to police custody for three days on sexual harassment charges. This order was issued by the Kochi Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on Saturday considering the petition of the police. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the police will now investigate the case more thoroughly. According to ANI report, the matter came to light when an actress alleged that Ranjeet attempted to sexually assault her inside a caravan during a film shoot. Based on the complaint, an FIR was registered on March 28 and Kochi Police booked him on serious charges. Police claimed that in the initial investigation the allegations and evidence were found sufficient, only after which Ranjit was arrested and presented in the court. Keeping in mind the arguments of the police, the court has sent him to police custody till Monday evening, so that the work of interrogation and evidence collection can continue. Ranjeet’s health has also become a topic of discussion now. His lawyer team argued in court that due process was not followed while arresting him and that his detention could pose a health risk due to his serious health issues (such as a liver transplant and previous spinal surgery). However, the court allowed police custody, and also directed that he be medically examined every 24 hours. Ranjith is already in 14-day judicial custody in Ernakulam Sub Jail and his bail application will be presented for next hearing on Monday/Tuesday. His lawyer says he is innocent in the case and calls the allegations false and a conspiracy. The police SIT is now investigating the evidence of personnel, witnesses and equipment present on the set, so that a clear picture can emerge. Apart from this, organizations of the film industry have also reacted to this matter and emphasis is being laid on the implementation of safety and complaint mechanism in the industry.
