Which is the all-time best team of IPL? The answer to this question is always entangled in debate. Some people put a team forward on the basis of trophies, while others declare someone as the topper as per their choice. To remove this confusion, we have prepared an all-time ranking based on data from 18 seasons (2008–2025). Besides, to understand the changing trend of IPL, a separate ranking of the last 4 seasons has also been made, in which the impact of the current form and new teams is clearly visible. That means in this story you will get two pictures – one of history and one of recent times. Before seeing the rankings, understand our process of arriving at the rankings. We have evaluated the teams on four parameters… 1. Match winning percentage – The biggest objective of any game at a competitive level is to win. The team which wins more matches will have higher winning percentage and will get more rating points. 2. Percentage of reaching the playoffs- At the beginning of every season of IPL, the first goal of the teams is to reach the playoffs. There is a competition between these top-4 teams to reach the finals. 3. Rate of reaching the finals- The IPL season starts with 10 teams but when it ends, only two teams are remembered. Winners and Runners Up. For this it is necessary that the team plays the final. 4. Rate of converting finals into trophies – IPL finals are also called pressure games. So converting finals into trophies is our fourth metric for teams. How the teams got points in the ranking: 250-250 points have been kept for all four scales. The team leading on every parameter got full 250 points. The more the other teams lagged behind the topper, their points reduced in the same proportion. In this way, there is a maximum of 1000 rating points by combining all four scales. The closer the teams got to 1000, the higher their ranking became. Now let us see which team has been in which position in all four scales one by one. After this we will see the final ranking… Chennai leads in winning matches, Mumbai is close second. Chennai has played 253 matches in 18 IPLs so far and won 142. The team’s winning percentage was 56%, which is better than all the teams. Mumbai has won 55% of the matches. Therefore the team has 246 points. Even in reaching the playoffs, Dhoni’s team Chennai Super Kings has qualified for the playoffs 12 times. The team’s percentage is 75%. Mumbai Indians have made it to the playoffs 11 times out of 18. The team is in second place with 203 points with 61%. Chennai also has the highest rate of reaching the finals.
