Germany’s right-wing party Alternative for Germany (AfD) has proposed to give Trump honorary citizenship of the German district Bad Durkheim. A decision on this is to be taken on October 29.

AfD local leader Thomas Stephan said that Trump helped in ending the Israel-Gaza conflict and freeing Israeli and 8 German hostages, so he should get this honor.

Apart from this, Trump’s grandfather Frederick was a resident of Germany and was a barber by profession. Trump’s family settled in America from Kallstadt village of Bad Durkheim.

Proposal put forward in District Council

The AfD has presented this proposal to the district council. District Administrator Hans-Ulrich said that before granting honorary citizenship, its rules should be thoroughly discussed.

He says that in Germany, honorary citizenship is given to those who have done some special work, but giving this honor to Trump may be controversial.

Many people feel that this proposal is just cosmetic and may not pass. Nevertheless, Trump’s long association with the region and his work have kept it in the news.

Trump’s grandfather left Germany when he was 16

Donald Trump’s grandfather Frederick was a resident of Kallstadt, a small village in Germany. Gwenda Blair’s book The Trumps: Three Generations that Built an Empire tells us that Frederick had a difficult childhood. His father died when he was eight years old. When he could not do farming due to weak health, his mother taught him the job of barber.

Frederick left the country at the age of 16 to escape Germany’s strict military law. There every young man had to remain in the army for three years. In October 1885, after a 10-day voyage, he reached New York. Opened a barber shop there again.

Frederick added some money and invested it in the gold mines of Alaska. This move was a superhit and he soon became rich.

Frederick Trump was accused of STOP scam

Frederick returned to Germany in 1902 and married Elisabeth Christ. Both of them went to America, but Elizabeth started falling ill due to the cold there. In 1904, Frederick went back to Germany with his wife, but the military there expelled him from the country. He was accused of stamp scam.

Returning to New York in 1905, Elizabeth gave birth to Fred Trump, father of Donald Trump. Frederick died in 1918, when Fred was just 15 years old. In 1927, Fred started a real estate company named Elizabeth Trump & Son, named after his mother.

He built and rented out affordable housing in Brooklyn and Queens, New York. This business went so well that Fred became the top businessman of the city.

In 1936 Fred married Mary Anne MacLeod of Scotland. His business flourished. However, in 1970, he was accused of not providing houses to blacks, which was later resolved. Fred’s hard work strengthened the Trump Empire and then Donald Trump made it famous worldwide.
