Shubham Badhwa of Ludhiana lost both his legs in a road accident 10 years ago and was confined to a wheelchair. Despite this, he did not give up his dream and achieved success in sports.

Recently he created a new history by winning the silver medal in the ITTF World Para Table Tennis Challenger held in Egypt. After this he won the gold medal in the UTT Second National Ranking Table Tennis Championship held in Vadodara, Gujarat from 2 to 4 December 2025. ​​​​​​

Shubham Badhwa’s journey started in 2016 when at the age of 19, he lost his legs in a road accident. Before this he was practicing gymnastics and had participated in many competitions.

Her dream was to represent the country in gymnastics, but an accident stopped that path. Even after being on a wheelchair, he did not give up and made India proud at international level. Now his eyes are on the Asian Games. He said that he remained in bed for 3 years, then a friend showed him a new path. After which the journey continues.

Were crazy about fitness

​​Shubham Badhwa (29) is a resident of Sham Nagar area of ​​Ludhiana. Earned B.Tech engineering degree from LPU. He always remained first in studies also. His father is a manager in a resort and mother is a housewife.

Shubham has been fond of sports since childhood. She was fond of gymnastics since 6th class and after 12th she also entered the world of modeling. He was very crazy about fitness. His passion for fitness was such that he used to go to the gym daily. He had big dreams and also the courage to do something big in life. But fate had something else in store.

Lost both legs trying to save dog

That night of 22 February 2016 was going to change Shubham’s life. Shubham was returning home from the gym as usual. It was evening time and Kochhar was passing by the market, when suddenly a dog appeared on the road. Shubham turned his bike rapidly to save that innocent animal. But in this attempt he lost his balance and had an accident.

After the accident, Shubham was immediately taken to Deep Hospital, but seeing the condition the doctors there also responded. Then he was shifted to DMC Ludhiana. Shubham remained on ventilator for the whole month. There was a war going on between life and death.

But the accident gave him paralysis. Due to severe injury to his spinal cord, his lower half completely stopped functioning. The doctors clearly said that now Shubham will have to remain in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.

3 years in bed, then friends showed a new path

After the accident, Shubham’s next 3 years were spent in great difficulties. He remained bedridden for three years. The body was not cooperating. Never had I imagined that Shubham, who was so active, would become dependent on others today. But a spark was still burning in Shubham’s mind. Accepting defeat was not acceptable to him. Shubham’s friends supported him in this difficult time.

Friends told Shubham that there is a lot of potential in the world of para sports. Table tennis can be played even while on a wheelchair. This was a new ray of hope for Shubham. He decided to get his life back on track.

After this, Shubham started taking para table tennis coaching from Sahil Sharma and Vivek Sharma. Sitting in a wheelchair, holding the paddle, hitting the ball, everything seemed difficult in the beginning. But Shubham did not give up. Practiced for hours every day. Gradually his hard work started bearing fruit.

Journey from first defeat to national gold

  • Lost for the first time in 2019: In 2019, Shubham participated in the National Para Table Tennis Championship for the first time. There were a lot of expectations, but they lost in the quarter finals itself. This shock was big. Many people said that maybe this game is not for them. But Shubham considered this defeat not as his weakness but as an opportunity to learn.
  • Worked hard during the Corona period: Then in 2020 came the Corona epidemic. Everything stopped. Tournaments stopped and training centers closed. But Shubham continued practicing at home. He made a small setup in his home and kept practicing for hours every day. When the world had come to a standstill, Shubham was keeping his dreams alive.
  • Great comeback of 2022: National Games were organized in Indore in 2022. This time Shubham surprised everyone by winning the gold medal in Para Table Tennis. The same Shubham who had lost in the quarter-finals in 2019 had now become the national champion. This victory was not just a medal but a victory of his hard work, dedication and courage.
  • Silver Medal in Egypt: Shubham’s journey did not stop after winning the National Gold. Seeing his hard work and talent, Sports Authority of India (SAI) started giving him professional coaching at the center in Gujarat. Here Shubham got the best coaches and facilities in the country. His training became more intense. Special attention was given to fitness. In the same year, Shubham represented India in the ITTF World Para Table Tennis Challenger held in Egypt. They won one match after another and reached the finals. Even though he lost in the final, he raised the flag of India by winning the silver medal. Winning a medal for the first time on the international stage was like a dream come true for Shubham.

Eye on bringing medal in Asian Games

Shubham’s achievements do not stop here. Now his eyes are on this year’s Asian Games. It is his biggest dream to represent India in the Paralympics and bring glory to the country by winning a medal. For this they are working hard day and night. 6-7 hours of practice every day, special attention to diet. Shubham says that it will not be easy to reach the Paralympics and win a medal, but he has full confidence in his courage.

With the help of SAI, Shubham is now getting excellent coaching and facilities. He is regularly participating in international tournaments. His experience is increasing with every tournament. Shubham says my dream is to win gold medal in Paralympics. He said that if I can come from 2016 to today, then I can win a medal in Paralympics also.

The unwavering support of the family became the biggest strength.

The unwavering support of Shubham’s family has been behind his success. When Shubham was in bed, his mother never let him feel alone. Despite his job, the father took care of Shubham’s every need. Elder brother always encouraged him. The entire family together made Shubham stand again.

Shubham says emotionally that if it had not been for the support of my family, perhaps I would not have been here today. Mother never let me give up. Father supported me in every difficulty. My brother always encouraged me. My family has a hand in every achievement of mine. They are my biggest strength.

When I can do it sitting, why can’t you?

Giving a message to the youth, Shubham says never give up, there will be difficulties in life but you have to have faith in yourself. If I can bring glory to the country in the whole world by sitting on a wheelchair, then God has given you everything. You have two hands, two legs, you can do anything. All that is needed is hard work and dedication. When I can do it sitting why can’t you do it standing.
