It is mandatory for women to wear hijab in Iran

Although hijab was made mandatory in Iran in 1979, on August 15, 2023, President Ebrahim Raisi signed an order and asked to strictly implement it as a dress code. Before 1979, there were no restrictions of any kind regarding women’s clothing in Iran.

Iran, under the rule of Shah Pahlavi, was a country with very free views regarding women’s clothing.

Recently, a new law regarding hijab was implemented in the country, in which women can even be given death penalty for violating the rules of hijab. Under Article 60 of the new law, convicted women can be punished with fine, whipping or rigorous imprisonment.
