Pargat Singh has been appointed the new president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC), replacing Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, who resigned from the post on Friday. The former Indian hockey captain and Olympian is now set to lead the Congress’s Punjab unit ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.

Who Is Pargat Singh?

Pargat Singh is a former Indian hockey player who represented the country at the 1988 Seoul, 1992 Barcelona and 1996 Atlanta Olympics. He also captained the Indian hockey team at the Barcelona and Atlanta Games.

His sporting career earned him several honours, including the Arjuna Award in 1989 and the Padma Shri in 1998. He also received the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Award in 2005.

Before entering electoral politics, Singh was associated with the Punjab Police and served as a police officer. He later moved into public life and contested the Punjab Assembly election from Jalandhar Cantonment.

Three Time MLA From Jalandhar Cantt

Pargat Singh has represented Jalandhar Cantonment in the Punjab Assembly since 2012. He first won the seat as a Shiromani Akali Dal candidate in 2012.

He subsequently joined the Congress and won the constituency again in the 2017 and 2022 Assembly elections. He remains the Congress MLA from Jalandhar Cantonment. His official Punjab Assembly profile lists his profession as a sportsperson and records his electoral career.

Association With Congress

Singh joined the Congress ahead of the 2017 Punjab Assembly elections after leaving the Shiromani Akali Dal. He had also been associated with Navjot Singh Sidhu’s political platform, Awaz-e-Punjab, before joining the Congress.

Within the Punjab Congress, Singh later took on organisational responsibilities. He was appointed the party’s general secretary in charge of organisation in 2021 and was subsequently inducted into the Punjab Cabinet.

Former Punjab Minister

Pargat Singh served as a minister in the Punjab government from September 2021 to March 2022. During his political career, he has been associated with portfolios including education, sports and youth affairs. His official legislative profile records his ministerial tenure and political background.

His background in sport has also remained a prominent part of his public identity, particularly his work around youth and sports development.

Takes Charge After Raja Warring

Singh’s appointment comes soon after Raja Warring stepped down as Punjab Congress chief.

Warring had headed the state Congress unit since April 2022. He submitted his resignation after meeting Rahul Gandhi in Delhi on Friday. His exit came amid reported differences and factional tensions within the Punjab Congress.

Warring has also said that he believed newly appointed Punjab Congress in-charge Sachin Pilot wanted him removed, though this remains his own claim.

With Pargat Singh now taking over, the Congress has made a leadership change in its Punjab unit months before the next Assembly election.
