Iran remains committed to both defending itself and pursuing diplomacy, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Sunday, warning that any fresh military action against the country would draw a stronger response.

“If enemies, once again, choose the path of military confrontation, they will be met with a stronger response than before,” Araghchi said.

At the same time, he said Iran “remains ready for a just and dignified solution through diplomacy.”

The foreign minister made the remarks while speaking to foreign ambassadors and heads of diplomatic missions in Tehran.

Talks Remain At An Impasse

The comments came as efforts to end the war appeared to have reached an impasse. A campaign of heavy bombardment failed to bring a decisive end to the conflict launched by the United States and Israel in late February, while Washington has in recent weeks reduced military operations and shifted towards economic pressure.

Iran and the United States had agreed to a memorandum of understanding in June that was intended to provide a framework for a permanent resolution. However, the agreement later collapsed, largely over disagreements surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran-US Talks Over Strait Of Hormuz

Iranian and US officials held indirect talks last week on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. Tehran said it presented seven conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

US President Donald Trump rejected the proposal but left open the possibility of further negotiations as well as renewed military operations.

The United States has not carried out strikes on Iran since September 1.

US media outlet Axios reported that senior members of Trump’s cabinet met on Friday to discuss the war in Iran and the conflict in Yemen.
