Indian wrestlers had a disappointing start at the World Championships on Saturday in Zagreb, Croatia, with all four athletes bowing out on the first day of competition.
In the men’s 61kg freestyle, Udit was defeated 0-2 by Taiyrbek Uulu of Kyrgyzstan, failing to score any points.
In the 70kg division, Rohit narrowly lost 4-5 to Begijon Kuldashev of Uzbekistan, despite a spirited performance. His hopes for a repechage entry were dashed when the Uzbek wrestler was eliminated in the next round.
In the 86kg category, Mukul Dahiya was outclassed 0-10 by American star Zahid Valencia, who advanced comfortably to the quarterfinals. Dahiya still has a chance for a repechage, dependent on Valencia’s progress to the gold medal match, as Valencia has already reached the semifinals.
In the heavyweight 125kg category, Rajat Ruhal lost 2-5 to Vlagyiszlav Balcajev of Hungary. Ruhal managed a takedown but could not maintain the momentum, conceding points on counter-attacks.
With Udit, Rohit, and Ruhal eliminated, India’s medal hopes from the opening day rest solely on Dahiya’s chances in the repechage.
