Police in Gujarat’s Patan district have busted a big cyber fraud network under “Operation Mule Hunt 2.0”. Investigation revealed that illegal transactions worth Rs 398.43 crore were made through 13 bank accounts. 14 people have been arrested in this case. According to the police, this network is linked to 228 cyber fraud complaints registered across the country. The action was taken as part of the state government’s campaign to curb online fraud and break the financial networks of cyber criminals. A statement issued by Patan Police said that during the analysis of data from the central government’s SAMANVAYA and National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCCRP), suspicious transactions were detected in some current accounts opened in Harij Nagrik Sahakari Bank. Investigation revealed that some people used to get individuals to open firms and bank accounts in their names by luring them with commission. Later the control of these accounts was handed over to middlemen and cyber thugs. According to the police, the account holders had allegedly given away ATM card, chequebook, SIM card, mobile number and internet banking information to middlemen and cyber criminals. After this, these accounts were used to transfer the money obtained through cyber fraud across the country.
