Amid global tensions, the demand for ‘dual-use’ bunkers made in Finland, seen in the picture, has increased rapidly. The ‘Merihaaka’ civil shelter in the capital Helsinki is an important example of this. This shelter, built 25 meters below the ground, is used as a swimming pool, gym, playground and parking on normal days, but in an emergency, it can be converted into a secure bunker with all facilities for 6,000 people within 72 hours. About 800 delegations from many European and Asian countries including Ukraine, Poland, Germany and UAE have visited Finland to see this giant shelter built in 2003 and understand its technology. In Finland, it has been mandatory by law since the Second World War to build bunkers under buildings larger than 1,200 square metres. The Marihaka shelter is spread over 71,000 cubic metres, which is approximately the size of a 7-storey commercial building. A total of 50,500 such shelters exist throughout Finland, of which there are 48 large and 5,500 small bunkers in Helsinki alone. Now, ‘Resilience Center Finland’ organization has also been formed to accelerate the export of these shelters and safety equipment.
